Porter's Five Forces

Buyer Power

High

Easy to switch to competitor caterers.

Response: Loyalty rewards and personal relationship building.

Supplier Power

Medium

Wide variety of suppliers possible.

Response: Advance notice to suppliers, multiple sourcing options.

Threat of Substitutes

High

Cheaper restaurant catering alternatives exist.

Response: Unbeatable quality and full customization.

Threat of New Entrants

Medium

Capital and client acquisition are barriers.

Response: Dominate our niche market early.

Rivalry

Medium

Competes with Moe's, Chipotle, and niche event planners.

Response: Superior ingredients and full customization.

Competitive Strategy

Focused Differentiation — targeting high-income clients who demand luxury and full customization. Second Mover advantage — improving on existing catering models by going fully digital-first.

Lock-In Strategy

TotalPartyPlanner CRM tracks all client preferences, event history, and booking frequency. Repeat clients unlock reward packages (complimentary course upgrades, venue additions). Stored preference data becomes a powerful switching cost — no new vendor can replicate the personalized service built from multiple events of stored data.

Reflection

We chose The Silver Spoon because the luxury catering industry is ripe for digital disruption. Most competitors still operate on phone calls and paper. Our IS advantage — the CRM preference engine — is something no purely manual competitor could replicate. Once a client's full event history, dietary restrictions, and preferences are stored, we deliver a personalized experience that feels effortless. That data IS the product.
