Technology Risk Simulation
Ernst & Young (EY) — awarded to Carter Joachim
What the Simulation Covered
The EY Technology Risk simulation places participants inside a technology risk engagement, where the job is to look at how a business relies on its systems and decide where that reliance creates risk. Rather than treating technology as an isolated IT concern, the work connects system reliability and data integrity directly to financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and operational continuity — the same questions finance teams face when they sign off on numbers produced by systems they do not control.
Core Competencies
Risk Assessment
Evaluating how technology failures, third-party dependencies, and process breakdowns create financial and operational exposure.
IT Controls & Compliance
How control frameworks are designed, tested, and evidenced so that financial reporting and data integrity hold up to audit.
Audit Documentation
Translating findings into clear, prioritized recommendations that business and technology stakeholders can act on.
Reflection
What I took from this simulation is how much of finance depends on trusting someone else's systems. An analyst can build a flawless model, but if the data flowing into it comes from an unvetted process or a vendor nobody reviewed, the output means very little. Technology risk work is essentially the discipline of asking where the numbers come from and whether that path is sound.
That framing is directly relevant to the finance roles I am pursuing. The ability to trace a figure back to its source system, understand the controls around it, and explain the risk in plain language is what separates analysis that gets trusted from analysis that gets questioned.
